JAMES GRAY, EDINBURGH. A WELL PROPORTIONED MAHOGANY LONGCASE CLOCK HAVING GOOD ORIGINAL PATINATION AND A WELL EXECUTED PAINTED DIAL BY HIPKISS & HARROLD, CIRCA 1800.

This attractive clock, of a fine rich colour, has a swan-neck pediment with brass paterae and central ball and eagle finial. Beneath the swan-neck are shaped wooden frets. The hood is flanked by reeded and brass capped columns and the sides of the trunk have matching quarter columns. The trunk door is attractively shaped and has a boxwood line set about a centimetre inside its border. The base panel is similarly decorated.

The painted dial is an attractive and relatively early one with well executed fruit in the four corners, surrounded by a raised gilt border. In the arch is scrolled gilt decoration with foliage and a classical building. There are seconds and date rings.

Height with/ without finial: 7' 4" / 7' 0" (224 / 213 cms)
