An unusual French Louis XV clock (pendule) with a firegilt cast and chased brass case, made c. 1750 and signed on the dial and the movement: Ferdinand Berthoud à Paris. The month-going movement has anchor escapement, pull-quarter striking work on two bells and alarm. The maker : Ferdinand Berthoud was born on 19 March 1727 near Neuchâtel in Switzerland. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to his brother Jean Henri. When he was 19, he went to Paris. Presumably he worked for Julien Le Roy, before setting up his own workshop. As he was an outstanding clockmaker he became "Horloger de la Marine Royale" (Clockmaker to the Royal Navy) in 1764. He produced excellent clocks and chronometers and left many published documents on clockmaking. He died childless on 20 June 1807.
