A rare and fine antique gilt bronze and patinated 'aux sauvage' mantel clock called "Le Commerce", attributed to Deverberie, c. 1800.

Representing a merchant holding a parrot over a bale surmounted by a box, accompanied by a child in native American attire. The base decorated with a trading scene, resting on four small circular feet. The enamel dial with Roman numerals and gilt directoire hands. The 8 day going movement with silk suspension strikes on a bell.

The case design reflects the vogue for exoticism that prevailed during the eighteenth century and continued into the next century.
