German ivory diptych sundial (Nuremberg)

Signed Leonhart Miller and also with a heraldic lily between the letters L and M, mark of Leonhart Miller Nuremberg. Dated 1637.

Two ivory hinged leafs with dimensions (closed): x  x mm.

A wire gnomon stretched between the two leafs and adjustable for the north latitudes of 42, 45, 48, 51 and 54 degrees. The floral and foliate engravings and ornaments in red, green and black. 

The top ivory leaf with rotating brass pointer and windrose chapter featuring 16 wind directions in German and a 1-32 scale with the classical mediterranean compass winds: Tramontan, Greco, Levante, Sirocho, Ostro, Lebechio, Ponete and Mastro. A detacheable pennant is missing.

At the innerside of the top leaf a vertical pin gnomon indicating the length of the day (Quatitas Diei) depending on the date depicted by the signs of the zodiac. The latitudes for 20 European cities, including Hertogenbosch, are also shown.

A recess in the lower ivory leaf contains a compass with four directions: Sept, Orie, Meri and Occi (north, west, south and east). The magnetic declination is 5 degrees East. If the dial is folded (closed), the compass remains visible through a small opening in the top leaf.

The solar hours (5-12-7) for the five different northern latitudes are indicated by the text Soli Deo Gloria. There is also a vertical pin gnomon for the Italian and Babylonian hours. 

The makers name Leonhart Miller and year of manufacturing 1637 are inscribed next to the pin gnomon.

At the bottom of the lower ivory leaf a circular brass conversion tool with aspectarium (volvelle). It provides conversions from moon- to sun hours depending on the age of the moon. The four principal moon phases are indicated as: Der volmon, Das leczt viertel, Der ney mon and Das erst viertel.

Twice the makers mark (a heraldic lily between the letters L and M) also appears at the bottom of the lower leaf.

Duitse Ivoren diptiek zonnewijzer (Neurenberg) 

Gesigneerd Leonart Miller en tevens met een heraldische lelie tussen de letters L M, merkteken van Leonhart Miller te Neurenberg.

Gedateerd 1637

Twee ivoren scharnierende platen met afmetingen (gesloten):   x    x    mm. De gnomon is een draad gespannen tussen de 2 platen en instelbaar voor de noorderbreedte van 42, 45, 48, 51 en 54 graden. De graveringen en versieringen  zijn in rood, groen en zwart. In de bovenplaat is een gat aangebracht om de kompasnaald te kunnen zien in de gesloten toestand. De versieringen zijn voornamelijk bloem en blad motieven. 

Bovenkant bovenste plaat heeft een draaibare messing wijzer met een windroos met 16 windrichtingen in het Duits en een schaal van 1-32 met de teksten van de acht mediterrane winden: Tramontan, Greco, Levante, Sirocho, Ostro, Lebechio, Ponete en Mastro . De losse windvaan ontbreekt.

Onderzijde bovenste plaat heeft een verticale pin gnomon met aangegeven de duur van de dag (Quatitas Diei), afhankelijk van de datum via dierenriemtekens. Tevens wordt de noorderbreedte van 20 Europese steden aangegeven, waaronder ook Hertogenbosch.

Bovenkant onderste plaat bevat het kompas in een verdiepte ruimte met 4 richtingen: sept, orie, meri en occi (noord, west, zuid en oost). De magnetische declinatie is 5 graden oost. De zonne-uren (5-12-7) worden voor de 5 verschillende noorderbreedten aangegeven met de tekst Soli Deo Gloria. Tevens is er een verticale pin gnomon met de Italiaanse en Babylonische uren met de makers naam Leonhart Miller en het jaartal 1637.

Onderzijde onderste plaat heeft een draaibaar messing omrekening hulpmiddel (volvelle) om van maan- naar zonne-uren te komen afhankelijk van de maanstand (aangegeven wordt: Der volmon, Das leczt viertel, Der ney mon en Das erst viertel). Tevens tweemaal het makers merkteken van de heraldische lelie tussen de letters L M . De messing schijf bevat een aspectarium.
