An early Dutch walnut veneered and carved longcase clock by Pieter Klock, circa 1710.

Square 11-inch brass dial with matted and foliate engraved centre and silvered engraved chapter ring signed Pieter Klock Amsterdam. Elaborate foliate pierced blued steel hands with alarm disc. Ringed winding holes and apertures for day, date and moon phase with high water Amsterdam indications. In the corners well cast and chiseled gilt brass cherub spandrels between foliate engravings. 8-day weight driven movement with anchor escapement. Dutch quarter striking on two alternating bells, locking plate at the mainwheel. Alarm on the large bell.

Very elegant walnut veneered case with flat molded hood surmounted by a elaborately carved cresting. To the front corners there are full twisted columns with capitals and basements, and quarter columns to the hind corners. The rectangular trunk has a long molded door with a veneered panel and a molded oval lenticle. A similar panel to the base of the clock.

The maker Pieter Klock or Klok, Amsterdam. Born in Uithoorn in 1665, died in Amsterdam March 10 1744. On July 27th 1703 the banns register mentions the notice of marrige between Peter Klock van den Uythoorn horlogimaker, 38 yrs (?), Kalverstraat (?) and Maria Kramer 20 yrs. Peter was a clockmaker and paintings dealer. In 1716 he made a list of "good men" at the request of the city council; a register of the major and best watchmakers. In 1704 such a register was made by Steven Huygens in which Peter Klock was listed as the last one. His workshop was at the Singel and later in the Kalverstraat near the Osjessluis. His son Martin, at whose premises Pieter resides later, was born on May 18th 1721.
